The reason I don’t sleep much…

Life is way more fun when I am awake.

Women hear it all the time from men. “You’re overreacting,” we tell them. “Don’t worry about it so much, you’re over-thinking it.” “Don’t be so sensitive.” “Don’t be crazy.” It’s a form of gaslighting — telling women that their feelings are just wrong, that they don’t have the right to feel the way that they do. Minimizing somebody else’s feelings is a way of controlling them. If they no longer trust their own feelings and instincts, they come to rely on someone else to tell them how they’re supposed to feel.

2014 was

– a rollercoaster

-ridiculously horrible

– amazing

-filled with new people and new experiences

– endless possibility

-so many tears I thought I drowned

-so many moments that made me laugh so hard I cried

-moments that made me feel so alone

-moments that made me realize how loved I really am

– a new apartment, a new bed, a new vanity, furniture I lost and gained

– new friends

-losing old ones

-walking away

-walking back

-walking towards someone new/some new things

-a world of new that only made me a better, stronger person

-a new city

-realizing I am enough – and that I don’t need to keep people in my life who kept making me feel like my choices somehow weren’t cool or enough

It was the best year I have had in such a long time, and while so many things are different now, I am more than happy than I was entering this year. I cannot wait for 2015 if it means more of this.

Things I Will Do in 2015

1. Let go of habits and people that do not make me better. And keep doing it even though it can be lonely, it can be hard, but I promise all it does is make you better.

2. Travel more. See a city I have not been to before (already started with my first trip to Chicago in two weeks)

3. Realize that nostalgia is a liar, and things were not as great as they seemed to be at the time.

4. Be more grateful for the amazing things in your life.

5. Make yourself a priority – always.

6. Make more time for breakfasts in the morning, and time for the paper –  a slower start to the day.

7. Gym/yoga regular practice – this counts for the make yourself a priority bin.

8. Buy yourself flowers more often.

Reasons I am making Iceland happen this year

In Iceland, books are exchanged on Christmas Eve, and you spend the rest of the night reading. People generally take their books to bed along with some chocolate. How cozy and wonderful does that sound?

(More fun facts: Iceland publishes more books per capita than any other country, and new books are typically published only during the Christmas season—the frenzy is called Jólabókaflóð, or the Christmas Book Flood.)

Tapiwa Mugabe, You are Oceanic

All she wanted was to find a place to stretch her bones.
A place to lengthen her smiles
and spread her hair
a place where her legs could walk without cutting and bruising
a place unchained.
She was born out of ocean breath.
I reminded her; ‘Stop pouring so much of yourself into hearts that have no room for themselves
do not thin yourself, be vast.
You do not bring the ocean to a river.
